Remember when keywords, secondary keywords, long-tail phrases, backlinks, and the Google PageRank that followed were the only things a small business owner had to worry about? Consumers now ask AI systems for answers, and that opens a new front for a small business looking to find customers and convert them into revenue. AI chatbots curate a short list of recommendations inside their answer, and being part of that answer opens a new and large door.

This search path converts visits to sales at a higher rate than non-branded organic Google results.2 A small business that optimizes for AI readability has an advantage over competitors who optimize only for traditional search.

The problem: most small businesses built their sites to maximize traditional search results and optimized their Google Business Profile (GBP) the same way. That leaves them blind to answer engines such as ChatGPT and Gemini. Missing machine-readable data, outdated content, and mismatched entity data make those profiles nearly invisible on the AI search path, the one 45% of consumers now use to find local businesses, up from 6% a year earlier.1

Tapping into AI-generated results requires a shift from word- and link-based PageRank optimization to structured data, content signals, and credibility markers. Three steps get you there.

Step 1: Complete your structured entity data and attributes

AI models rely on structured data to verify that a business is legitimate and provides the services and products it claims. Malformed or missing data stops an AI model from reading and trusting your profile, and it hides the important parts of your business. Blank fields in your GBP mean missed citations from AI answer engines.

Actions:

  • Fill out every attribute on your profile, from amenities to service options, and keep each one current.
  • Select a primary category and add a description. Then add hyper-relevant secondary categories and their descriptions.
  • Be specific in the Products and Services sections. Use the full field: Google caps a service description at 300 characters and a product description at 1,000.3 Avoid generic titles. Write each description to answer a question your customers ask.

Step 2: Engineer justification-optimized review management

Like your descriptions, your customer reviews need to be specific. A review that praises the business in general terms, and never names the service or product or its impact, has little value to an AI system or to a potential customer. AI answer engines use customer reviews as the justification for the product or service they recommend.

Actions:

  • Take down the QR code by the cash register that asks for a Google review. Instead, ask customers to write a review that names the specific services or products they bought and the impact those items had.
  • Populate your profile’s Q&A section with relevant questions about your products and services, and maintain it. Set it and forget it works against a business trying to be the answer. Fresh, relevant content signals to an AI system that your business is fresh and relevant, and that raises the chance of a citation.

Step 3: Feed vision AI and freshness signals

Modern search engines use vision AI, software that reads the contents of an image, to check the photos on your profile and use what it finds to form citations. Your images show details about your workspace, your deliverables, and the quality of your service. AI answer engines favor profiles that are actively managed and shy away from static ones. Keep your profile fresh with new content that has value to customers and AI systems alike.

Actions:

  • Create a content schedule and stick to it. Upload real, high-resolution photos or short videos weekly or bi-weekly that show work in progress and completed deliverables. Users and AI both recognize stock images, so avoid stock anything.
  • Every week, publish a post to GBP with a direct, concise topic sentence and a clear call to action (CTA). Posts signal to AI systems that your profile is relevant and fresh.

The takeaway

Winning AI search citations means moving beyond basic NAP (name, address, phone) consistency to structured context across every GBP module. It takes some work, but being recommended by an AI chatbot makes it worth it.

Next step: open your Google Business Profile and audit the attributes field. Complete any field that is empty or incorrect. Then rewrite your top three service descriptions to match the conversational questions users ask AI. Not sure where you stand? Check your site’s AI visibility for free, no email needed.
