Perhaps it is counterintuitive, but traditional Google Search results and the recommendations AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity generate are fundamentally different. For nearly 30 years, Google’s PageRank algorithm, driven by keywords, secondary keywords, long-tail phrases, and backlinks, dictated how websites were designed. AI is disrupting that approach: these systems choose their results on credibility, relevance, and consistency.
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and the list of links a Google search returns still matter, but they are only part of the new playing field, and the sport is changing. Businesses whose online presence rests solely on SEO and page rank are nearly invisible to answer engines and seldom recommended. A 2026 BrightLocal survey found that 45% of consumers now use AI tools to find local businesses, up from 6% a year earlier.1 AI still handles a smaller share of all online searches, but Gartner predicted a 25% drop in traditional search volume by 2026,2 and ChatGPT already fields more searches each day than Bing’s 1.2 billion.3
Three more findings show that AI search matters to local businesses. A 2024 study by Princeton University and Georgia Tech found that optimizing content for AI citation can raise its visibility in generative search results by up to 40%.4 A 2025 Superprompt analysis found that AI search traffic converts at five times the rate of organic Google traffic,5 and a Visibility Labs study found that ChatGPT traffic converts 31% better than non-branded organic search.6

So why aren’t AI answer engines recommending your business, and how do you gain the advantage?
Your website alone is rarely enough to earn an AI citation, especially if it was built only for Google. Organizations that establish verifiable authority and structure their data so machines can read it gain a competitive advantage in their market.7
Why your business may be invisible to AI search
-
Muddy waters
Inconsistent business names, addresses, and phone numbers across your website, social profiles, and Google Business Profile lower your citation rate. Missing or poorly structured data lowers it further.
-
Weak content signals
Content is king, but it must be the right content. Regular updates matter, but if your site explains what you do without explaining why you are relevant, AI lacks the confidence to recommend you. Give it clear signals: your location, your specialties, and the exact situations where your business is the right fit.
-
The biggest misstep
Treating Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) like traditional local SEO. Local SEO aims for page rank; AEO aims to establish your business as credible, relevant, and authoritative.
At ngenAOS, we build that credibility. We design answer-engine-optimized websites for year-round and seasonal Jersey Shore businesses and use data to raise your citation rate and search visibility.
The off-season is the time to rebuild your website for answer engines and the revenue they bring.
