When a water heater leaks, the heat won’t turn on, or the scheduled Uber doesn’t arrive, consumers are turning to AI to find the plumber, the HVAC technician, and the local car service that will solve the problem.

Two years ago, that consumer typed “plumber,” “HVAC,” or “car service near me” into Google and started scrolling. Today, customers ask AI, ChatGPT and Gemini among others, and get an answer. Instead of scrolling a list of results, they get a name and a phone number.

More and more often, that customer never sees the website of the business AI recommended.

Here’s the reality: 45% of consumers now use AI tools to find local businesses, up from 6% one year earlier.1 Search behavior started to change in 2026, and it is still changing, fast. Your customers no longer rely on Google results the way they did in 2024, or even 2025. The keywords, secondary keywords, and long-tail phrases on your site do not get you cited by AI. Customers ask AI a question and get an answer. Your site was built for local SEO (search engine optimization). Being cited as the answer takes local AEO (answer engine optimization).

Traditional local SEO used words, phrases, and backlinks to top Google’s PageRank algorithm, pull visitors to the site, and convert them into revenue. That approach fails against a generative answer. To be the answer, your site must be structured for machine reading, show credibility and authority in your subject, load quickly, and stay relevant and current. Most of those steps are more complex than chasing the top spots on a list.

To see the difference, consider what local SEO and local AEO each produce and how the customer uses it.

Think of local SEO as a map. The old paper kind, with folds that made completing level 200 in Tetris seem easy in comparison. It gets the customer to your door, and to nine of your competitors’ doors.

Local AEO tells the customer which door to open.

That recommendation changes the calculus. AI search traffic converts at five times the rate of organic Google traffic,2 and a Visibility Labs study of 94 ecommerce brands found ChatGPT traffic converts 31% better than non-branded organic search.3 AI recommends the door, and the customer trusts the recommendation.

What is local SEO? (Winning the map pack)

Local SEO is the practice of optimizing a business’s online presence to attract visitors and convert them into revenue. The goal is a visible spot on Google Maps and in Google’s localized results.

Search “plumber near me” on Google. You get sponsored links at the top and organic results below. No recommendation, no justification. The customer sees a list of blue links and picks one.

Local SEO focuses on three things:

  • Claiming and maintaining a Google Business Profile
  • Keeping contact information consistent across every directory
  • Collecting as many customer reviews as possible

Google’s algorithm pairs those signals with the keywords and phrases in your website copy to decide who reaches the first page of results.

Customers on traditional search compare your services and products against nearby competitors as they appear on the results page. The higher your spot, the more likely a customer visits the site, calls, and makes a purchase.

What is local AEO? (Winning the AI recommendation)

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the process of structuring your site’s content so AI systems such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude can access it, extract it, and use it to answer a user’s question. Asked about a local business or service, AI typically gives two or three recommendations, not ten. That short list is one reason AI referrals convert at the rates above.

For local businesses, AEO means visibility inside AI Overviews and conversational AI chats: what the experts call zero-click surfaces. A zero-click surface is any answer the customer reads without clicking a link.

Where should a local business put its energy? Three places:

  • Fresh, relevant content that adds value for your customers
  • Structured data that machines can read
  • Entity clarity: establishing your brand as a trusted, credible authority on your service or product

Customers using AI are looking for information. They research problems, ask for personalized recommendations, and pose specific questions: “What can my kids do in Seaside Heights while we’re on vacation this summer?”

Three differences to keep in mind

  1. Where your business appears

Local SEO places your site in a ranked list of blue links and on map interfaces. Local AEO places your business directly inside AI-generated summaries and answers.

  2. How content is evaluated

Local SEO rewards full-page relevance, location pages, and backlinks. AEO relies on short blocks of extractable text that answer a question, entity clarity, and expert citations.

  3. Query types

Local SEO still dominates location-based and transactional searches. Local AEO wins on long-tail, conversational, question-based queries.

How to combine local SEO and local AEO

These approaches do not compete. They complement each other, and a website needs the strengths of both, applied with intention. Strong local SEO builds trust and authority in your domain. AI models use that trust and authority when they recommend a local business as an answer.

Step by step:

  1. Start with the map (local SEO foundation). Solidify your Google Business Profile and local citations first.
  2. Expand to the answer (local AEO). Add FAQ sections written as visible text to your service pages that address the specific, granular questions customers ask before they book.
  3. Publish relevant content to your site and social pages on a regular schedule.
  4. Check page-load speed and fix anything slow.

The takeaway

Relying on general SEO alone leaves a blind spot in the modern customer journey and on your ledger sheets, and both gaps widen over time. To stay competitive in 2026, small businesses need to master both games: local SEO and local AEO.
